I have finally gone through all four pages of Dvorak's Humoresque once. Naturally, the resultant sound will need a couple more weeks of daily practice before it sounds like anything but a discordant jumble of stop-and-go notes.
Usually, whenever I finish learning a piece, or at least learning the notes, I immediately start on another even while I continue practicing the older one. I do this because if I take a break, my sight reading learning curve regresses pretty quickly. Sight reading is being able to read notes by sight and play without memorizing. I'm not there yet, but I'm improving.
I wanted to do next the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Tempest Sonata because the Tempest Sonata is my favorite Beethoven sonata. But this thing is 13 pages long and will be quite involved, so I've decided to learn first a 5 page Lord of the Rings soundtrack piece called "Concerning Hobbits". I hope after that, I'll have enough skill and staying power to learn a 13-17 min (depending on how fast you play) piece. I like a challenge. Wouldn't have taken on Humoresque if I didn't!
For your listening pleasure, the 3rd movement of the Tempest Sonata played by Wilhem Kempff, and below "Concerning Hobbits" (I just hope I'll be as good as this guy when I'm done learning it!!).
