Oil Pulling

Yes I know. I already wrote a blog today, it's a double whammy ;) Don't worry this is going to be very short.

I'm starting today the oil pulling experiment mentioned in the Olive Tree blog. I don't believe in miracle cures, but this has so much feedback out there, I want to scientifically approach this and document it. I'm documenting and taking daily pictures of any areas I'd like it to improve (arm and leg) and also pictures of general areas where people have reported improvement (gums and teeth).

I've taken note of the placebo effect, but since I've tried so many things before (natural experimenter over here) and rarely get a favorable result, I'm assuming placebo is not really an issue. I'm also not changing anything in my diet or routine. Same tooth brushing routine and same baking soda mouthwash I've been using for months.

I've done it twice today already, and after swishing oil for 12 minutes, spitting, and rinsing my mouth, I noticed plaque seemed completely softened (makes sense since if hardened food is not water soluble it must be oil soluble). After lightly and quickly brushing my teeth just with water, my teeth feel squeaky clean and slippery. Still, this is nothing you can't achieve with some dedicated toothpaste, 2 minutes of proper brushing, and floss.

I'll update in couple of weeks with pictures on any successes or failures of this whole thing.

  1. Interesting about the plaque, never hear about that. I heard about oil pulling but it seemed too "out there". If it goes well for you, I might try it.

But you do make a good point, it might be just that oil is a good solvent and gets rid of a lot of bacteria and other crap in our mouths. That for instance is believable.
