I hadn't realized how much I missed this until we went to the beach yesterday. I spent an awesome Sunday doing mostly nothing but lying in the sunshine in a straw hat at the beach, catnapping to the sound of waves. Sure, there were a few dips into the water, a lot of listening to Hala's girlfriends discussing boy troubles and swimsuit fashion, and even a few mediocre Arabic songs discussing the same (the boy trouble, not the swimsuits). But in me land, it was mostly me, sunshine, water, and a perfectly lazy day!
In other good news, I'm having great success germinating things. So much that I'm starting to get seriously worried that I'm biting off more that I can chew. I'm already spending 30 minutes to an hour every morning watering and transplanting things, although some days I can get away with 15 minutes. Now I know why people have automatic watering systems in actual gardens.
I'm going to have to eventually figure out what to do with 6 Kiwi, 6 carob, and 4 apple trees. Dad suggested we take a few kiwi and carob trees to the piece of land down south, since we don't have any of those trees there. In my defense though, I just had to grow six of each of these. You see, these trees are, like palms, either female or male. You need one of each for fruit, and there's no way to know what you've got until they reach maturity years later and start flowering. So by planting 4-6 I increase the probability that I've got at least one of each.
I'm also growing enough tomatoes to supply the family I think. My current two will be giving me ripe fruit at the end of June at the latest, and I've got 4 tomato seedlings, and a couple more cherry tomato seeds on the way. Chili pepper plant is loving the heat. It's starting to carry a bunch flower buds. Looking forward to seeing what chili flowers look like. Also my growing avocado tree. It's just so beautiful, I love it!
I can't emphasize the important of compost. It's like magic. I add a nice big trowel full for most of my plants, and they've been growing so fast, and giving much more fruit than any we've tried to grow years before. I also made compost tea (Google recipes), which I dilute 1:10 and water with it once a week. Fair warning though, compost tea smells awful. Ever wonder what the sewers smell like? Yup, you got it.
